Benefiting Millions of People, Kpong Water Supply Expansion Project in Ghana Wins the National Quality Engineering Award

On December 8, the National Quality Engineering Award Presentation Ceremony for the first batch of projects during 2018-2019 sponsored by China Association of Construction Enterprise Management was held in Beijing, and the Ghana Kpong Water Supply Extension Project undertaken by CGGC won the National Quality Engineering Award.

Accra, the capital of the “Gold Coast” Ghana, is sunny and hot, with an average temperature of 29℃ throughout the year. The city's water demand is 842,000 tons per day, while the actual water supply is 402,000 tons per day, meeting the demand of only 47 per cent of the population. As Ghana's largest water supply project to date, the Kpong Water Supply Expansion Project can provide safe water for 3 million residents of Ghana's capital Accra and its surrounding areas, greatly address the water shortage in the capital area and benefit thousands of households. Hence, it is reputed as a local “life project”.

Having won a number of heavyweight awards, what makes the Kpong Water Supply Expansion Project excel?

I. Popularizing and Applying Advanced Technologies

In the past, Ghana's large-scale water supply system adopted the traditional way to lift the treated water to high-level water tanks, from which it was fed to urban water distribution networks, while this project took the lead in introducing the mode of combined use of fixed head pressure pump and variable frequency pump, which reduced the second pollution of water source and popularized the application of variable frequency pump.

In view of the water quality characteristics of raw water in Walter Reservoir, such as high temperature, low turbidity, organic micro pollution and slightly acidic water, the alkalinity of raw water was increased by adding lime; the technology of sludge reflux and low load clarifier were adopted to solve the problem of low turbidity; the mixing tank mechanical aeration and the pre-chlorination process were adopted to solve the problem of organic micro-pollution. Such process selection was economical and reasonable, which saved the cost and greatly improved the water quality.

The water transmission pipeline of the project is more than 70 kilometers long, characterized by long construction line and complicated surrounding conditions. In addition, land privatization and land expropriation in Ghana has always been the focus and difficulty for project implementation. By optimizing the original scheme design, the water pipelines up and down the mountain were reduced, various risks of constructing huge water pool on the mountain top with poor geological conditions were avoided, the energy consumption of the system was reduced, and the construction period was shortened.

II. Integrating Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Concept

Internationally-advanced purification process, equipped with automatic valves, on-line instruments and automatic control equipment were adopted, which can realize remote control and automatic operation, ensuring system safety and high efficiency. After being treated, the waste water produced by the system entered the clean water tank for standby, so that the waste water can be recycled and reused to achieve the goal of energy saving and water saving.

III. Promoting China's Technology and Standard

Chinese standards, equipment, technology and management were applied for the whole line of the project, while local procurement, including consultation, subcontracting, labor service and materials were taken into account. The high utilization of local raw materials has driven the economic development of the region, setting up a new model for China-Africa cooperation.

IV. Actively Performing Social Responsibilities

The project created employment opportunities for local employees, with more than 600 local people employed at the construction peak. Technical training courses were organized regularly to improve the operation level of local workers; local personnel are recruited to participate in the management to enhance the enthusiasm of local employees. Facilitated by project implementation, more than 10 kilometers of rural roads were built to improve the traffic environment of local residents. Money and material donations were made to two nearby schools to improve the teaching conditions. Joint free clinics were provided to local people, paving the road of heart-to-heart exchange with practical actions, and establishing a responsible brand image of Chinese enterprise.
